It was with little surprise that Breast Cancer UK (BCUK) greeted the announcement from Cancer Research UK on 4 February 2011, that breast cancer now affects one in eight women. An increase from one in nine women in the first decade of the 21st century; one in 12 in the 90s and one in 20 during the 60s.
Regardless of the thousands of millions of pounds that have been raised enthusiastically for breast cancer research by women and men accross the world the incidence of breast cancer stubbornly continues to rise; it is now the foremost cancer in the UK.
BCUK have been saying for years that it is imperative we consider additional ideas about the causes of breast cancer. However, the cancer establishment continue to recite the same views that cancer is increasing as a result of lifestyle factors i.e women's personal choices. This argument has been used for the past 20 years, during which time breast cancer incidence has risen significantly.
BCUK believe that environmental pollutants, carcinogens, and toxic chemicals in our everyday products, which research has linked to breast cancer, are helping to create the significant increase in this disease. We call on the Government to acknowledge environmental factors and hazardous chemicals as a risk factor in breast cancer and argue that they should be tackled in the National Cancer Plan by severely restricting or banning their use to help stop the breast cancer epidemic.
