EU Commission to ban BPA from babies bottles

After a year long campaign, Breast Cancer UK is delighted with the EU Commission’s recent decision to ban Bisphenol A (BPA) from all baby bottles as from June 2011.

Clare Dimmer, Chair of Breast Cancer UK, commented: “We congratulate the EU Commission on their enlightened decision to safeguard the present and future health of our babies and toddlers by banning the use of this hazardous chemical from baby bottles.”

Breast Cancer UK’s No More BPA campaign, launched almost a year ago, highlighted to the public throughout the UK and EU the major health issues linked to the chemical and raised awareness of the controversy over BPA that had been raging for a few years.

Scientific studies have shown that very low doses of BPA during early development were linked with breast and prostate cancer, heart disease, diabetes, obesity and ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) in later life.

Clare Dimmer continued: “The EU Commission’s action shows that they are putting the health of babies and toddlers before commercial profit. Its decision to ban BPA can only enhance the future health of children throughout the EU”.
