Fundraising Trustee

Do you want to help fight Breast Cancer? Are you a fundraising and development professional who wants to use your skills to help a fantastic charity increase their reach and impact?

We are looking for an individual with professional experience in  fundraising and income generation to join the Board of Trustees.   They will support the CEO and Head of Fundraising to identify and develop networking and relationship opportunities as well as new income sources through strategic advice  The successful candidate will join a Board with a diverse range of skills and backgrounds, and will be a member of the charity’s Audit, Risk & Scrutiny Committee (ARSC).

About us

Breast Cancer UK’s mission is to prevent breast cancer through scientific understanding, education, collaboration and policy change.

We are the only UK breast cancer charity focused entirely on the prevention of breast cancer by campaigning to reduce risk, using traditional and digital channels to extend reach. Today 1 in 7 women will be diagnosed with the disease at some point in their lives but at least 1 in 4 breast cancers is thought to be preventable.

  • We fund scientific research that will help to understand and address the preventable risk factors for breast cancer
  • We educate and raise awareness of the preventable risk factors for breast cancer and provide practical information to help people reduce their risk
  • We campaign for policy changes that promote the prevention of breast cancer

Our research focuses on environmental and chemical causes of breast cancer but our education and advice includes all preventable risk factors.

Breast Cancer UK’s income has grown from £107,000 (31.3.2014) to £395,919 (31.3.2019). With a newly appointed dynamic CEO and a highly engaged Board, we have ambitious plans set out in our strategic plan to expand still further.

The role

This is an exciting opportunity to join the Board and support the CEO and wider staff team to deliver our vision and strategy.

As well as fundraising and income generation experience, you will have outstanding communication skills and be able to support, challenge and scrutinise the charity’s fundraising strategy, as well as constructively contribute fully to wider issues considered by the Board.  While you may not have personal or family experience of breast cancer, you will need to have a passion for what we do.

Key requirements

You will be able to demonstrable experience and skills in:

  • growing income streams within the voluntary sector or similar context.
  • promoting income growth in individual giving, corporate partnerships, legacies and/or trusts and foundations.
  • successful fundraising strategies, action plans and performance indicators.
  • strategic support and advice as a member of the charity and its Audit Scrutiny & Risk Committee and to contribute positively in a non-executive capacity demonstrating sound judgment and effective decision making;
  • risk management issues and the role of a Trustee as opposed to a staff member;
  • listening, communicating and influencing effectively, building relationships and working collaboratively and effectively as part of a team.

Other information

Time Commitment

The Board holds meetings in London on a quarterly basis. The post holder will therefore need to be accessible to London. The successful candidate will also be expected to attend one annual strategy planning day and two informal meetings with Trustees in London. The successful candidate will also be a member of the Audit, Risk and Scrutiny Committee (ARSC) which meets once a quarter in the evening by video conference.

Gift Aid is reclaimed by the Breast Cancer UK from the tax that I pay for the current tax year.
