Our policy statements

Getting our message across to decision makers

To ensure we get our message across to decision makers of all kinds, from politicians to public health practitioners, we’ve developed a number of important policy statements which explain where we stand on key public policy issues with implications for breast cancer prevention.

Our statements cover a range of public policy areas including chemicals, environmental pollution and Brexit.

Chemicals

Breast Cancer UK calls for the phasing out of harmful chemicals and their replacement with safer alternatives. We want to see a comprehensive EU and national strategy to address this issue. Specifically, we advocate that the UK adopts its own strategy to reduce public exposure to endocrine disrupting chemicals, whilst remaining part of the EU’s REACH system to maintain a robust regulatory regime for chemicals post-Brexit. The individual chemicals briefings below contain more details about our recommendations to decision makers.

Environmental Pollution

Breast Cancer UK supports the development of a non-toxic environment and preventative action to reduce public exposure to pollutants, including cancer causing chemicals. We want UK Ministers and EU Commissioners to implement robust measures to support this. Harmful chemicals are widespread in our environment, through air contaminants such as particulate matter or pesticides and biocides that impact the quality of our land, rivers and seas. There is evidence these are linked to increased breast cancer risk.

Brexit

Breast Cancer UK advocates that Brexit should not be allowed to result in the weakening of the laws and regulations protecting our public health and the environment. The EU has delivered some of the most comprehensive and stringent public health and environmental protections in the world. Whilst not perfect, these protections have successfully reduced public exposure to chemical pollutants linked to Breast Cancer.
