Do something amazing today, help prevent breast cancer

Breast cancer rates are rising. This year, 55,000 women and 368 men across the UK will receive the devastating news that they have breast cancer, but you can help change that.

We believe far more can be done to prevent breast cancer. We work to save lives and reduce breast cancer incidences by funding research into the causes, and educating people on how to reduce their risk.

One of the most powerful ways that you can join this fight is by leaving a gift in your Will.

How to pledge a gift to Breast Cancer UK

We know that leaving a gift in your Will is something you’ll want to think about very carefully. That’s why we would recommend using a solicitor to guide you through the process and write your will. A solicitor will ensure all your wishes are included in your will, all legalities are carried out and that your will is written and witnessed correctly and is valid.

You can find a list of your local solicitors by using the Law Society Find a Solicitor quick search.

If you are considering leaving a gift in your will and have any questions please get in touch with the Breast Cancer UK team on 0845 680 1322 or email elinor.dorrell@breastcanceruk.org.uk

Why leave a gift in your will?

Our research helps us understand the causes of breast cancer, so we can prevent more people from being diagnosed.

Leaving a gift in your Will can help fund even more first-class animal-free research at leading institutions across the country.

With your help, our work can prevent breast cancer.  Marta was 48 when she was diagnosed with stage 2-3 breast cancer having recently moved to London.  Watch Marta’s story to understand why prevention is important.

Join us in preventing breast cancer

Every gift – no matter what size – helps us to keep our breast cancer research and educational work going. Your gift isn’t a quick fix, it’s a lasting legacy. It will help us to:

  • continue funding research into the causes of breast cancer.
  • raise awareness and help more people understand and take action to reduce their risk of developing breast cancer.
  • campaign for better public health policies to protect future generations from the devastating effects of harmful chemicals.

Support people like Samantha

This disease can affect anyone, which is why our donor-funded educational programmes reach out to women with support on how to protect themselves and their children.

Samantha was just 35 years old when she discovered a lump in her breast. A mum of two, the impact was devastating. “I didn’t consider my headspace, I just went into survival mode,” says Samantha. “I guess I was a little bit in denial, but perhaps, deep down, I knew it wasn’t the end,”. What followed was 18 months of devastation and uncertainty. Read Samantha’s story

FAQs

Why do I need a Will?
Every adult should have a Will. Without a Will the law decides who inherits. With a Will you decide. With no Will it will usually take longer and cost more to wind up your estate.

Why should I do it now?
None of us knows what is around the corner. If you leave it until you need it, it will be too late. So let’s get it done.

What type of gift can I leave in my will?

A Share of your Estate (also known as a residuary gift) – once you have provided for your loved ones, you can leave a percentage share of what remains of your estate to charity. This is the most straightforward and most valuable way of leaving a gift as it is not affected by inflation

  • A cash gift (also known as a pecuniary gift) – you can leave an exact sum of money to charity
  • A specific gift – you can choose to leave a specific item, such as a piece of jewellery to a charity

If you are interested in alternative options for leaving a gift in your will speak to your solicitor for more advice.

Do I need to let you know if I have left a gift in my will to Breast Cancer UK?

You do not need to let us know, however, it can be very useful for us to know to help us plan for the future. If you would like to let us know or have any questions about leaving a gift in your will please call us on 0845 680 1322 or email elinor.dorrell@breastcanceruk.org.uk
