We at Breast Cancer UK are so fortunate to have amazing people from across generations support our important cause. From centenarians through to Joseph, our youngest supporter at just 7 years old. Nicknamed ‘Joseph the Fierce’ by neighbours and friends for his fearless and fierce determination, Joseph took on the 2.6 challenge to raise money for us by running an incredible 2.6 kms. We asked Joseph why he chose to do it:
“I decided to do the 2.6 Challenge because I wanted to run like mummy and daddy do. I know they are an important charity because they do science to help people learn how to avoid getting poorly and I really like science.”
Running 2.6km is quite a challenge for any of us. But imagine what an achievement this is for a 7-year-old kid who says he has never run that far and that while he likes running he usually gets a stitch and comes last at his sports day. This time, Joseph didn’t let his past performances distract him from his goal. Cheered by his neighbours and friends, Joseph set off with his Daddy to run 2.6km around the village (safely and maintaining social distancing). He proudly earnt his ‘Joseph the Fierce’ title by not only completing the challenge in good time but he raised over £350, an incredible sum of money.
We asked Joseph how he felt after crossing the finish line:
“Really, really, really happy but really tired! I didn’t think I would be able to run that far but I did it! You don’t have to be the fastest you can still run a long way!
I was really surprised how many people supported me and that I raised so much money, over £350 is loads! My friends now all want to try a challenge too so we are thinking about what we can do together at the moment”
Thank you Joseph, without people like you, our vital research into breast cancer would not be possible. You are definitely the gold medal winner in our sports day!
