As your constituent, I am writing to you to tell you about a campaign I am supporting which calls on the Government to publish the Chemicals Strategy this year. The campaign is led by Breast Cancer UK, a charity that works to prevent breast cancer by campaigning for improved public health and environmental protection. (WE WILL INSERT YOUR CONNECTION WITH BREAST CANCER HERE) Breast Cancer is the most common cancer in the UK. Up to 55,000 women and 390 men are diagnosed each year. Incidence rates have increased by 25% over the past 20 years. It is agreed across healthcare that more attention should be given to prevention. Recently the Health and Social Care Committee put out a call for evidence specifically on prevention. For us, prevention starts with having a regulatory framework that keeps people safe and can react to developments in the scientific community’s understanding of the link between certain chemicals and breast cancer risk. Without the Chemicals Strategy, we do not have a clear picture of our Government’s thinking, of how UK REACH will function and what the direction of travel is in chemical regulation in this country. Simply, we cannot be sure that we are being protected to an acceptable level. I’m calling on you as my MP to support this campaign by raising this matter directly with the Parliamentary Under Secretary of State (Minister for Environmental Quality and Resilience), Rebecca Pow MP.
