Every action counts this World Environment Day
Published 5 Jun 2014
June 5th 2014 is World Environment Day (WED) and it is the United Nations’ principal vehicle for encouraging worldwide awareness and action for the environment. As it says on their website "it also serves as the ‘people’s day’ for doing something positive for the environment, galvanizing individual actions into a collective power that generates an exponential positive impact on the planet."
Whilst we are a breast cancer charity, the aims and objectives of Breast Cancer UK are closely aligned with those of World Environment Day and the environmental movement. The harmful chemicals and environmental pollutants which are damaging our planet are also potentially contributing to our increased vulnerability to breast cancer.
We are calling on our supporters to take action this World Environment Day to help us raise the profile of the importance of a healthy environment for a healthy population. There are a number of actions you can take:
- Follow us on Facebook and Twitter and spread the message to your friends, family and followers
- Write to your political representatives and ask them to sign up to our Manifesto which calls for a preventative approach to breast cancer by tackling the environmental pollutants and harmful chemicals associated with the disease.
- Take action to ban BPA which is used widely in food and drinks packaging, is found in ecosystems all over the planet and is also associated with breast cancer and reproductive problems.
"Planet Earth is our shared island; let us join forces to protect it." (UNEP WED Website).
