Breast Cancer UK has launched an Emergency Appeal to counteract the negative consequences caused by Coronavirus. Like many other voluntary organisations, the charity has suffered a devastating financial drop in its income (by around 80%) exacerbated by the lockdown currently in place. Should the lockdown remain, the charity could be forced to close its doors in the near future.
Measures announced by the Government such as the £750 million support package will be of little benefit to the charity and Breast Cancer UK’s Chief Executive has written to the government, expressing concern at the limited nature of support for the charity sector, explaining why the charity needs bespoke help.
Thalie Martini said:
“Unlike many other charities, Breast Cancer UK is entirely reliant on individual donations, grants and fundraising for income. Ordinarily, when people can go about their daily lives they donate generously and fundraise in the most amazing ways. When they are themselves short of funds, and unable to get out, or get-together – fundraising suffers, and our charity suffers. And this has been felt across the charitable sector.”
This drastic decline in our income will have a direct effect on the cutting-edge research we fund on hormone disrupting chemicals. It will also affect our education and outreach work in the community to raise awareness of how to prevent breast cancer.”
Despite making the difficult decision to work at reduced capacity, by furloughing some of our staff to weather the storm during the pandemic, we continue to remain committed to our long-term cause of making prevention a reality.
The charity has also joined forces with other Charities and Parliamentarians to urge the Government to go further and establish a £4 billion emergency stabilisation package to help charities stay afloat, and a separate furlough scheme for charities to enable them to continue to work during the crisis.
