Warwick University student Jacob has a cycling challenge on his hands. Along with his friends he’s undertaking a 100-mile cycle through the New Forest, all in aid of breast cancer research and awareness. His motivation is strong and his muscles are raring to go – inspired by his wish to raise money for breast cancer awareness after his mum was diagnosed with the disease whilst he was in his last year of secondary school.
It was a very difficult time, for the whole family as his mother went through rounds of chemotherapy and two mastectomy operations, finally entering remission as he was preparing to go to university.
“It was a really hard time for all of us, although especially my mum” says Jacob. “I remember initially being very scared at the prospect of her dying for the first time in my life. Her meeting and losing friends going through their journey of treatment has been incredibly harrowing and made us appreciate how lucky we are. We’re also incredibly grateful to all of our extended family and friends for their abundance of love and support throughout and to this day.”
When the opportunity arose for Jacob to do this particular cycling challenge, something that had been on his tick list for a while, he was determined to raise money for Breast Cancer UK in the process. His two friends are also raising money for charities of their choice.
Jacob said: “I chose Breast Cancer UK because the work it does really resonates with me. I like the fact that they focus on prevention through education – it’s a positive approach which helps us all to consider what we can do to reduce our risk of cancer in general – but also breast cancer in particular.”
The 100 mile cycle will be tough, especially in the heat of August. It’s the farthest Jacob has ever cycled. But they’re taking all the necessary accessories to keep them cool and hydrated. And they’ve enlisted the help of a friend with a car to be on call, in case there are any mishaps.
