With the summer season in full swing, staying fit and healthy can sometimes feel like a challenge. However, with a little bit of planning and motivation, you can easily maintain your fitness routine and therefore, reduce your risk of breast cancer throughout these warmer months.

Here are some tips on how to stay fit and active in the sunshine:

Stay hydrated

It is more important than ever to stay hydrated when exercising in the heat. Make sure to drink plenty of water before, during, and after your workout to help regulate your body temperature and prevent dehydration. Additionally, to keep cool wear lightweight, breathable clothing that will keep you comfortable during your workout. Opt for light colours that will reflect the sun’s rays rather than absorb them.

Choose the right time

Try to schedule your workouts during the cooler parts of the day, such as early morning or late evening. Avoid exercising during the hottest part of the day, typically between 10am and 4pm. In extreme heat, it may be necessary to dial back the intensity of your workout. Listen to your body and don’t push yourself too hard when the temperatures are high.

Mix up your workouts

If the heat is just too much to bear, consider moving your workout indoors to a gym with air conditioning. You can also try swimming or water aerobics for a refreshing and effective workout. Don’t be afraid to switch things up and try new workouts during the summer months. Take advantage of the warm weather by going for a run outside, swimming laps in a pool, or trying out a new outdoor fitness class. Mixing up your routine will keep things interesting and help prevent burnout.

Cool down properly

After your workout, make sure to cool down properly by stretching and hydrating. You could also try to exercise in the early morning or late evening when temperatures are cooler. Listen to your body and take breaks as needed during your workout. If you start to feel dizzy, lightheaded, or nauseous, stop exercising and cool down immediately.

Protect your skin

When exercising outdoors, make sure to protect your skin from the sun’s harmful rays. Wear sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses to prevent sunburn and reduce your risk of skin cancer. Don’t forget to reapply sunscreen every two hours, especially if you’re sweating or swimming.

Eat well to perform well

Take advantage of the abundance of fresh fruits and vegetables available during the summer months. These foods are not only delicious but also packed with nutrients that will help fuel your workouts and keep you feeling energised. See our FREE seasonal calendar and Organic Book here.

By following these tips, you can ensure that you stay fit and healthy throughout the summer months. Remember to listen to your body, stay hydrated, and enjoy all that the season has to offer. With a little bit of effort and motivation, you can maintain your fitness routine and feel your best all summer long.
