Our accessibility statement
Last updated: 17th November 2025
Our commitment to accessibility
At Breast Cancer UK, we are dedicated to ensuring digital accessibility for all users, including people with disabilities. We continuously strive to improve the user experience and adhere to evolving accessibility standards. Our goal is to provide content that is accessible, usable and inclusive for everyone.
Conformance status
Current standard: Our website (breastcanceruk.org.uk) is designed with the aim of meeting the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 AA/AAA criteria.
Future enhancements: As the accessibility landscape evolves, we are closely monitoring the upcoming WCAG 3.0 guidelines and will work diligently to incorporate these enhancements into our digital assets as soon as practicable.
Please note that while we aim for full conformance, some dynamic features or third-party content may not yet fully meet these standards. We are continuously working to address these issues.
Technical standards
Accessibility guidelines: We are developing and maintaining our site in accordance with WCAG 2.2 (AA/AAA) and preparing for adoption of WCAG 3.0 (Bronze, Silver, Gold) once released.
Assistive technologies:
- Screen readers: JAWS, NVDA, VoiceOver
- Magnifiers: ZoomText
- Keyboard-only navigation
Known limitations
Despite our ongoing efforts, the following areas do not yet fully conform to WCAG 2.2 AA/AAA. We have referenced each failure against the relevant WCAG criterion and provided an estimated resolution date.
- Missing alternative text on images (WCAG 1.1.1 Non-text Content):
Several images across the website currently lack appropriate alt text. This may present challenges for screen reader users and others relying on non-visual forms of navigation. We are conducting a full audit of all images on the site and creating meaningful alt text for each one.
Estimated resolution: December 2025.
-
Links require discernable description (WCAG 2.4.4 and 4.1.2)
This requirement helps ensure that users with disabilities can understand where a link will take them before activating it, improving navigation, usability, and compliance.
Estimated resolution: December 2025.
Disproportionate burden
We recognise that in some cases achieving full conformance may impose an unreasonable burden in terms of cost, time or technical limitations. For example, converting extensive archives of legacy PDF documents into fully accessible formats may be disproportionate given current resources. In such instances we will provide alternative formats (such as plain-text summaries or audio recordings) upon request and will continue to prioritise accessible creation of new content. We regularly review these considerations to ensure any burdens remain reasonable while still progressing toward full accessibility.
Additional disproportionate burden includes certain brand colours not meeting minimum contrast requirements (WCAG 1.4.3 Contrast Minimum and WCAG 1.4.6 Contrast Enhanced):
Some of the branding colours currently in use across the website do not meet minimum contrast standards. This may impact users with low vision, colour blindness or other visual impairments. To assist with this, we have implemented an alternate contrast version of the colour-scheme on the site, providing improved text and interface contrast for users who require it.
