I am writing to you as a constituent because I have strong concerns about potentially harmful chemicals in our everyday environment. I am supporting Breast Cancer UK’s campaign to call on the UK Government to improve regulation of them and protect our health.

Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals (EDCs) such as PFAS are now everywhere, hiding in plain sight. They are added to our food wrappers, cosmetics, clothing, furniture and cookware. Many of them can build up in the body over time and may interfere with our hormones. Our bodies are being flooded with an invisible cocktail of chemicals that are potentially putting us at greater risk of breast cancer, as well as of other diseases such as infertility and obesity.

We all deserve to know what’s hidden in the products we use every day so that we can make informed choices. But ultimately, it shouldn’t fall entirely on individuals to seek out information to protect our health. Governments, regulators and industry must take a lead.

Yet in practice, Britain has been falling behind neighbouring countries in protecting its citizens from the risks posed by EDCs.  It’s time for this to change, before it's too late.

While data about EDCs’ long-term impacts doesn’t exist yet, we cannot afford to wait until then to ban them. The sooner we act, the sooner we can protect our health. Until it can be proven that these products are safe and do not have adverse effects on human health, their use should cease.

As your constituent, I'm asking you to write to the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, urging her to act. Please call on the UK Government to adopt a precautionary approach and ban the use of EDCs in all non-essential products.
