Know your breasts

Healthy breasts come in all shapes, sizes, and densities.

But it’s important to recognise when something’s not right.

Checking your breasts for any unusual changes can help discover breast cancer early.

Get to know your breasts

Make a habit of it, in the shower or before you go to bed, at the same time every month for example in between your periods, or at the start of each month, if you don’t have periods

As breasts can change throughout the month, checking at the same time every month makes any changes to look out for more noticeable.

Check for changes you can see

Look in the mirror with hands behind your head

  • your breast (swollen, inflamed, dimpled, rash)

  • your nipple (sunken, crusty, discharge)

Lie down with your arm above your head

Check for changes you can feel:  such as lumps or continuous pain.

Starting with the centre of your nipple, walk your fingertips outwards in a spiral around your whole breast. Finish under your armpits checking for any kind of lump – big, small, moving or fixed.

Around 90% (1) of breast lumps don’t lead to breast cancer and are completely harmless. But checking your breasts regularly can help detect breast cancer early which makes treatment much more likely to be successful.

Remember, reducing your risk through certain lifestyle changes can help prevent breast cancer developing and recurring and can improve your survival following a breast cancer diagnosis.

If you feel a lump in your breast or notice any abnormal changes, you should always get it checked by your doctor.
